How we rate sources

Every ECTV story is built from several independent reports. Under each story, members see a label next to every outlet that reported it and the source balance: how those outlets spread from left to right, plus official bodies and OSINT analysts.

The labels describe an outlet's documented editorial line, not whether a single report is true. A story confirmed by outlets across the spectrum and by officials is usually on solid ground; a story carried by one side only deserves a closer look.

Method

Official bodies (authorities, armed forces, regulators, infrastructure operators) are labelled from their type. News outlets and accounts were rated in a research round against established media-bias research, such as Media Bias/Fact Check, AllSides, Ad Fontes Media, the Reuters Institute Digital News Report and studies of national media landscapes. Outlets owned or controlled by a government are also marked "state". When the evidence is thin, the outlet stays unrated. Editors review the ratings and correct them; tell us if you think one is wrong via corrections.

We never use sanctioned state media as sources.
