Prague fire in Nuslí injures two, one rescued from burning flat

A fire broke out in a flat on an upper floor of a housing block on Kotorská street in Prague's Nuslí district on Sunday evening and spread to a unit on the floor above, prompting a second-level alarm out of four, fire officials said.

"We are responding to a second-level alarm fire in a flat on Kotorská street," Prague fire brigade said on social media platform X shortly after crews were called to the scene.

Thick black smoke poured from windows as sirens sounded through the neighbourhood, Blesk.cz reported. The second-level alarm brought a larger contingent of professional and volunteer firefighters to the scene along with heavy equipment; because of the fire's height, crews fought it both from inside the building and with aerial platforms and ladders.

One person was rescued directly from the burning flat and handed to paramedics, fire officials said. Several other residents were evacuated from the building as the response continued.

Ambulance service spokesman Karel Kirs said one patient suffered a minor first-degree burn to an arm, while ten other people were checked for smoke inhalation with negative results.

The fire was localised, meaning its spread was stopped, shortly after 6:30pm, and put out completely by 8:18pm, fire brigade officials said. The fire brigade estimated damage at around 1.5 million Czech koruna, Blesk.cz reported.

A Prague police spokesperson said road restrictions in the area were expected to last about another hour while investigators worked to establish the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
